St Alfege church & the site of St Mary’s church, Greenwich
St Alfege church is the parish church of Greenwich. The current building celebrates its tercentenary in 2018 and is also the focus of a current £1.8 million HLF-funded project, ‘Heart of Greenwich: People and Place’, focusing on the restoration, accessibility and interpretation of the historic fabric, and opening up previously unseen areas of the church for visitors to experience and understand.
St Mary’s church stood for just over a hundred years (1820s-1936) on a site just inside Greenwich park, now adjacent to the National Maritime Museum Sammy Ofer Wing. A ‘lost’ and even forgotten church, there are no visible remains above ground.
