Spectacular success in Belfast
‘Figuring Commonality: Hamlet and World Cinema’ was a spectacularly successful Belfast event. Director Sherwood Hu arrived in Belfast from the Shanghai Theatre Academy and was immediately plunged into meetings and interviews, with both Sherwood and event organizer, Mark Thornton Burnett, appearing on the flagship arts programme, Arts Extra, to publicize the event.
The event itself was well attended by staff, students, members of the public and representatives from local organizations, including the Chinese Welcome Centre, and a lively discussion forum took place afterwards, questions being posed on such matters as Shakespeare’s contemporary relevance, the applicability of Hamlet to today, and film’s message of reciprocity and forgiveness.
Discussion continued apace during the vox pop interviews during the reception, the consensus being that this had been a crucial event that flagged up the vital significance of the humanities to our everyday lives.
