Are you interested in Charles Dickens and the Victorian period? Do you enjoy word puzzles? If so, join Dr Claire Wood and Professor Hugo Bowles and help crack the ‘Dickens Code’! As a young man, Dickens taught himself an obscure shorthand system. He used this throughout his life to make notes, draft letters, and report speeches. Few of his shorthand papers survived, but those that do are very difficult to understand, this is because Dickens adapted the system for his own use, changing the rules and inventing new symbols along the way. As a result, several texts remain mysterious and unknown to this day. In this interactive virtual workshop, aimed at adults, you will hear about the shorthand system that Dickens used, learn the basics of decoding, and have a go at deciphering a line of Dickens’s shorthand text.
