Writing from the Inside Out

November 20, 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Canterbury’s 19th-century prison still retains many of its original features and this workshop is an opportunity for young people to write their own histories into this space. While its primary function was to punish offenders, some Victorian inmates learned to read here and many of their stories were recorded and are still available today. At this workshop historic writing experts will share the history of the prison with young people, and show how immersive research can stimulate creative responses. Prompts will include historic drama, original archives, manacles and whips on loan from Westgate prison.
