Worlds of Possibility: Murder, Mystery and Meaning

19 November, 2020, 10:00 am - 11:00 am

This is an online event.

Your chance to play detective! There has been a murder and you have to work out what happened. In this interactive online game, follow the clues to solve the mystery and learn how linguists analyse meaning.

Think about the meanings of some familiar little words you may not have thought about before, like ‘if’, ‘must’ and ‘might’, and see how important they actually are for communication. Analyse these words in terms of alternative realities – the kinds of parallel worlds explored in science fiction, or in films like Sliding Doors and Back to the Future. Solve a murder mystery and find out how language works!

Suitable for young people aged 16-18.

This event will also take place on 20 November, 14:00-15:00.

This event is part of the series ‘Navigating New Worlds’ organised by Queen Mary, University of London.
