Words You Didn’t Know You Needed

November 19, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Fun and informative, ‘Words You Didn’t Know You Needed’ is an interactive quiz-based performance which aims to stimulate interest in broad concepts of language renewal, obsolescence and change, and to build awareness of the varied history of the Irish language in particular.

The event focuses on a selection of amusing, quirky and arcane words from medieval Ireland. Armed with a fact about each word – a linguistic fact about the word itself or a historical fact about the period to which it belonged – the audience will be invited to take part in a real-time ‘Ask the Audience’ poll to find out which words were borrowed from invaders and neighbours, which words survive into Modern Irish with new spellings and meanings, and which words fell into disuse but could be easily revived for the 21st century.
