Vaccination Old and New Café

November 18, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

This is an online event.

Vaccines dominate the news right now. Vaccine development represents a possible exit strategy from the pandemic, conjuring up both hope and fear. But how did we get here? Featuring a mix of lightning talks and spoken word performance, come and join us for a chat about the history of vaccination. Find out about the history of infectious diseases and how vaccination was a medical tool mired in controversy from its beginning. Enter the strange world of Victorian anti-vaccination ballads. And learn more about how 19th-century newspapers and magazines carried word of vaccination, shaping public views about its practice.

Organised and hosted by Dr Catherine Charlwood (University of Liverpool), Dr Sally Frampton (University of Oxford) and Dr Kari Nixon (Whitworth University).
