The Lilburne Family

November 22, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Sunderland has a strong link to the origins of English republicanism. This talk will explore the legacy of the local Lilburne family, who played a crucial role during the English Civil War. While John ‘Freeborn’ Lilburne is a well-known character due to his role as leader of the Levellers, his brother Robert’s role in the fundamental political challenge of the Civil War is less well-known. Indeed, as signatory of Charles I’s death warrant, he was key in fundamentally questioning the ways in which political states should be led. Both men were engaged in the radical changes to the political landscape of the 17th century and helped shape the development of English republicanism through their political actions and publications.
