The Inglorious Dead
November 21, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm£4.99
Central London is littered with memorials commemorating the nation’s war dead and military heroes. ‘The inglorious dead’ will pass by such noted monuments as the Cenotaph and Nelson’s column to introduce you to the hidden and mis-remembered places associated with the infamous, from the regicides who ordered the execution of Charles I, to purported ‘Nazi’ graves.
The activity takes the form of a historical walking tour around Whitehall, including a visit to the Banqueting House. The tour will introduce you to the figures associated with these sites and encourage you to think critically about the relationship between history, memory and the built environment. It will also address public fascination with ‘secret’ or ‘hidden’ histories – labels frequently applied to Giro’s gravestone outside the former German embassy, purportedly the only ‘Nazi’ memorial in London. Taking in this site, the tour questions the myths we generate about the past.
Please meet at 9:45am outside the main entrance to Banqueting House to begin the tour.
