The End of Social Housing?

22 November, 2018, 4:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This event will produce a beautiful handcrafted map in felt that will tell the stories of members of two of London’s most exciting and diverse housing communities: Brixton and Effra Housing Coops in Lambeth. Come and help make the map, participate in a short film and hear some wonderful stories.

It has been claimed that social housing is going to end any day now because cash-strapped councils are demolishing large estates and London is being overrun by the private property market. But is it really the end of an era or a chance to rethink what housing is really for? Come and find out about one of the best kept secrets of social housing in London. The humble housing co-op started life about 40 years ago and there are now over 300 of them all over London providing low-cost social housing to their members. Members who simultaneously own and rent their homes. Is this in fact truly social housing?

Please note the venue for this event has changed.
