Romancing the Gibbet – At the Instigation of the Devil
16 November, 2019, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Event Navigation

‘Romancing the Gibbet’ is a collaboration between poet, Ralph Hoyte and historian, Steve Poole, exploring ‘dark tourism’ at sites of extraordinary public execution in Georgian Britain. This is one of four related events for the festival where researchers will explain the historical background to a single public hanging, perform some spoken-word poetic responses, and introduce the project’s four free audio trails. At this event a sample audio-trail will be relocated in and around the venue for you to try out.
Please remember to download the app to your phone or GPS-enabled tablet beforehand and bring headphones if you want to experience the audio trail! Instructions and further details on how to download the sample trails and the full trails are available at http://satsymph.co.uk/
Content warning: some strong language and themes of murder and public execution.
Due to the nature of this event if you have any questions about accessibility we recommend getting in touch directly with the organiser.
This event is part of the ‘Romancing the Gibbet’ series organised by University of the West of England:
