Rediscovering the art of Victorian graphic journalism
23 November, 2017, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
Newspaper readers today are familiar with debates about fake news, the use of embedded war correspondents and the desire for immediacy that drives our own 24-hour news culture. But who were the first special correspondents and artists and what made them ‘special’? Professor Cathy Waters and Dr Ruth Brimacombe will answer these questions in discussing their online exhibition, Picturing the News, which rediscovers this new breed of 19th century newspaper reporter. This illustrated talk will be followed by a wine reception.
Many reporters were household names in their own day, highlighting the extraordinary nature of their achievements. While commonly associated with the reportage of war, these special correspondents and artists were in fact tasked with routinely chronicling all manner of topical events, from engineering innovations, civic affairs and criminal trials to royal tours, municipal ceremonies and exhibitions as well as military campaigns at home and abroad. Come along to this illustrated talk to find out more!
