Parts Unknown: The Extraordinary Maps of Hermann Moll
12 November, 2020, 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
This is an online event.
Come along to explore one of Derby Local Studies and Family History Library’s greatest treasures and help solve a mystery! Hermann Moll’s The World Described is a set of the most complete maps produced in 18th-century Britain and his work was inspiration for the imaginary maps in Gulliver’s Travels. But how did they get here and who used them? No-one knows!
The first part of this workshop will introduce to you to these incredible maps and what they can tell us about exploration, exploitation and the imagination in 18th-century Britain. The second part of the workshop will launch a flash-fiction competition to fill the gap that the archive cannot tell us: how and why the maps made their way to Derby!
Please note, in order to join this event, you will be asked to read and agree to the University of Derby’s Online Safety Agreement; this will be sent to you to read prior to the event.
This event is part of the hub series organised by the University of Derby.
