Paignton lantern procession workshop
18 November, 2017
The Paignton Lantern workshops will take place through a series of community making sessions working with regional partners Torre Abbey, Paignton Library, Brixham Edge and the Palace Theatre, with Doorstep Arts as the lead cultural delivery partner.
On Saturday 18th there will be Lantern and music-making workshops for children aged 4-14, taking place at St Mary Magdalene Church Hall, Torquay, TQ1 4BX. The first workshop is 9.15-10.15am (children aged 4-7), then 10.15-11.15 (for children aged 7-11) and finally 11.30 to 12.30 (for young people aged 11-14). These three workshops are led by Wren Music and Doorstep Arts artists and are open to any children/families who want to come along.
The work is part of a larger programme of children and young people’s participatory arts in areas of high deprivation and fragmented community cohesion in Torbay. Paignton town centre is receiving intervention through participatory action research – it is a site which has been lost to the local community due to endemic drug use and violent crime, and the lantern procession is serving as a visible act of concerted community reclamation – animating and re-invigorating the central street with the involvement of local families.
Come and help make lanterns, which will be part of a special procession later in the year!
