Music and Migration (Singing Competition)

23 November, 2019, 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Come along to a folk singing competition for ages 8 to 18. The event will recall how singing was of vital importance to Bangladeshi immigrants arriving to work in its mills and factories in the 1950s and 1960s. Young people are particularly welcome to come along and experience how collective singing of and listening to these songs provided critical succour to their forefathers in a time of displacement and upheaval.

The competition will take place at the Heaton Mersey Community Centre auditorium between 12:00 and 15:00 with lunch between 13:00 and 14:00. This will be followed by performances of folk songs by local music bands and a Q&A between 15:00 and 16:00. Entries for the competition can be sent to a.ghosh@manchester.ac.uk.

There will also be an associated exhibition between the 14 and 23 November.
