Leather at lunchtime
21 November, 2017, 12:00 pm - 23 November, 2017, 2:00 pm
Come along to the pop-up exhibition from the National Leather Collection to handle objects, make your own leather crafts and hear introductory talks from historians, leather specialists and designers.
Northampton has a strong connection with the history of leather. The town was historically the centre of Britain’s leather and shoe trades and it is also home to the National Leather Collection. This huge and varied collection includes objects as diverse as footwear, wallpaper, helmets, jugs and vellum documents, showing that leather is a material with unique properties and many unexpected uses.
For the first time in decades, there are plans to make this internationally important collection fully accessible to the public in a new museum in Northampton’s Grosvenor Centre. This event is therefore a fascinating opportunity to rediscover the history of leather and its place in Northampton’s local history. The collection will be open to the public for three lunchtimes during the festival and there will be a range of activities, suitable for all ages.
The event will run 12-2pm on 21, 22 and 23 November 2017.
