Crafting Connections
17 November, 2020, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

This is an online event.
Applied and participatory approaches within the humanities have the potential to not only help us understand but also actively change the world we live in. Building on the new connections made and community focus experienced during the 2020 lockdown, this creative community-based event invites the Clifton, York neighbourhood to join with York’s Traveller community to connect over traditional crafting and storytelling.
Flowers have and continue to play a central role in Roma, Gypsy and Traveller heritage and culture, and flowers form the central theme of this online crafting event.
The session begins with a short film featuring Traveller artisans discussing the history and practice of flower making, and includes examples of flower crafting using natural materials such as wood and leaves and is accompanied by a soundtrack created by local Traveller musicians. Attendees will then be invited to try the craft at home and join in the online conversation as they do this by posting comments and pictures.
Head over to the York Travellers Trust Facebook page to join in on the day and make your own paper flowers! You’ll need pipe cleaners and any colour tissue paper (or toilet paper).
