Coxside Smoke Signal

21 November, 2020

Activities will be taking place both in-person (socially distanced) and at home.

Artists Crab & Bee are creating work packs for delivery to community group ‘bubbles’ and to homes in the Coxside neighbourhood of Plymouth, with the help of community engagement specialists Take A Part. The packs will include materials for participants to write messages about their hopes for themselves and the local area (particularly in relation to the Covid pandemic) and turn them into paper boats for sending to the future. There will be a zine created by Crab & Bee about the local boat story on which the project is based.

Crab & Bee will also hold a day of open air workshops, making messages with family bubbles from the Crazy Glue community group. The messages will be launched through fire in a large paper boat on the beach and slipway in Coxside on 21 November. Due to the Covid pandemic this will not be a public event, but will be shared through films online and still images on noticeboards around the area.

The project will attempt to put into practice ideas from ongoing research with local communities about effective community arts in the face of the Covid pandemic, conducted by members of the Performance Experience Presence research group at University of Plymouth.

Due to nature of this event, participation is by invitation only to local residence.
