Clay, Marble and Pixels: The City

19 November, 2018, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

This interactive event will focus on the earliest cities. It will begin with a short introductory talk illustrating the layout of those very ancient places and what this might tell us about the people that lived there. There will then be a hands-on session in which you will be taught the basic principles of 3D modelling, using the free and user-friendly software Sketchup. Taking inspiration from the talk and from additional iconographic material, you will be invited to combine simple solids to create a small, digital city in 3D.

You will be invited to look at the historical sources, but also to reinvent shapes and spatial relationships in order to produce an entirely personal digital output. The training will include the use of free online libraries of pre-made digital objects to enhance the models. You will be free to choose if they prefer to follow accuracy or to generate amusing historical paradoxes, featuring, for example, modern furniture in ancient buildings, or placing Victorian coaches in prehistoric cities.

This event will be followed by a ‘Clay, Marble and Pixels: The House’ workshop on Wednesday 21 November between 3:00pm and 5:00pm which must be booked separately.
