But I Know This City!
23 November, 2019, 10:00 am - 10:00 pm
50 years ago B.S. Johnson’s ‘book in a box’ The Unfortunates was published. Acclaimed as one of the great post-war experimental novels the 27 separately bound chapters (other than first and last) can be read in any order.
For Being Human festival 2019, 75 readers will be taking on the role of B.S. Johnson. Spreading out across the city of Nottingham in which the book is set – in bookshops, pubs, churches, homes and a host of atmospheric nooks and crannies – they are ready to read this book to you. This is a unique event to mark a truly unique and wonderful novel.
Readings will be taking place across the city. You can begin the event at any time from 10:00 through to 15:00 at the Lounge, Broadway Cinema, with readings happening every half an hour. The Final chapter will be read from 15:30 through to 22:00, also every half an hour. You will be given a map and will be free to plot your own journey through the city and the novel.
The readings will be spread across the city so be prepared to walk/ travel between venues. In total you should be able to navigate your way through the whole book in around four to five hours (or just choose readings to drop into!).
